Art & Culture

Exhibitions of paintings, photographs, and typical items are on show all year round. Sorrento and its coast are rich in venues where noteworthy cultural events have been held for many years. Some examples are the exhibition of Pirandello’s work which was recently held or the exhibition of great photographers from the past such as Cecil Beaton, Cartier-Bresson, Avedon, and modern ones as well. The Sorentine Coast is a center for cultural events due to the numerous associations who put a great effort every year to enliven the tourist stay with attractive and successful initiatives.

One of the permanent venues is Museo Correale di Terranova, an ancestral home which once belonged to an old noble family, dates back to the fifteenth century. The last heirs of the family, Alfredo and Pompeo, declared that on their death the family’s collections of works of art would be displayed in the Museum which was opened to the public in 1924.
The Museum is made up of three floors where the treasures of all ages ranging from archeological relics to Sorrento in-laid word work of the nineteenth century are displayed parallel to old furniture and paintings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including foreign artists such as the Flemish school and the famous Neapolitan “Scuola di Posillipo”. In addition Italian and foreign majolicas- ceramics, items of Eastern china, clocks of various origin, and old cameras may also be admired. Lastly the original writings of Torquato Tasso, the famous Italian poet born in Sorrento can be seen here.

Another place to visit is the Museum of Tarsia located in the old part of the town - a seventeenth century building where a multipurpose centre has been set up. Valuable items made by the in-laid technique and divided by age of production are here on display and also fragments of the past set in their context such as newspaper articles, prints, ordinary items and other odd things.
